Scarlet Scarab, the Egyptian superhero, finally sucked me into superhero comics.

On my love for this new ancient Egyptian inspired superhero, and her influence on my wider reading.

As someone with a long-held love of the art and mythology of ancient Egypt, the introduction of the Scarlet Scarab character in the Moon Knight TV series was an extremely exciting and pleasing moment. She has such a stunning design, and it was a wonderful moment for Layla El-Faouly to be thrust in superherodom, via mythologically-inspired means, in the story.

I was instantly hooked on the character. So I was then a bit disappointed to find out that she had been created for the TV show, so there was no further content to consume to have more adventures with her. I mean it was really awesome that they did create this fantastic new character, but I wanted more!

Ever since I’ve been keeping a close eye on new releases from Marvel hoping she might eventually pop up. This year my wish was granted, thanks to her having a starring role in a comic miniseries, Moon Knight: City of the Dead.

I drank in that series, and then in a new bit of comic buying behaviour for me, found that I was so enamoured by Scarlet Scarab’s glorious design that I sought out extra copies of most issues…
